Sociology, Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences
Website Since 2006, the Sociology Department has held department seminars periodically throughout the academic year. The seminars feature the work of scholars from our own department and other departments at Boston College, as well as scholars from Columbia, Harvard, Yale, and many other universities. The seminars also provide opportunities for our advanced graduates students to present their research in a public forum. The wide range of topics can be viewed on our Archives page. Throughout the year the department also co-sponsors various lectures and programs with other university entities, and contributes to important university events. In 2016, for example, Sociology Associate Professor Brian Gareau was a co-lead faculty member of BC’s ILA-sponsored four-day conferenceexploring the implications of Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment and climate change. From 2003 to 2013, the Sociology Department hosted the Robert and Risa Lavizzo-Mourey Distinguished Visiting Scholar Series, which brought leading sociological scholars to the Boston College campus for a period of residency. The series, funded by Robert and Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, focused on range of sociological themes and featured lectures by Frances Fox Piven, bell hooks, and Loïc Wacquant, among many other public intellectuals. Information on previous visiting scholars can be found on our Previous DVSS page.
