Slavic & Eastern Languages and Literatures, Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Slavic & Eastern Languages and Literatures. Founded in 1969, one of the oldest in New England, our department offers a diverse number of programs and courses in Linguistics and on Slavic, Near Eastern, and East Asian languages, literatures and cultures. Our graduates have pursued successful careers in foreign service, international business and law, research and scholarship, and many other exciting venues. Our faculty members teach and research over a wide range of areas and subjects, including, but not limited to: women in the former Yugoslavia and in Leningrad under siege; Jewish-Russian literature and culture; Classical Armenian; liturgical language; second-language acquisition; the history of Linguistics; pan-Arabism and nationalism in the Near East; early Chinese literature; Russian Romanticism; contemporary and émigré Russian literature. As a unique department both at Boston College and in the larger academic community, we represent languages and cultures from many parts of the world.
