“Untold Stories: A Glimpse of the Caribbean through Haitian Art”
About this Event
View mapThis collaborative event invites audiences to explore a selection of twentieth-century Haitian artworks from the McMullen Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Presented as part of the museum’s "Into the Collection" series, the exhibition highlights the rich narratives, lived experiences, and cultural expressions of Haitian communities.
Brought to you by undergraduate students in African and African Diaspora Studies and French at Boston College (under the supervision of Dr. Carine Schermann), and undergraduate students of French at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (under the supervision of Dr. Danielle Boutwell), this project offers a unique opportunity to engage with the creativity and depth of everyday life depicted in these paintings. Through their work, students deepened their understanding of Haitian history and culture, and prepared to share these insights with the public.
Please join us on Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 8pm at the McMullen Museum on the Boston College campus for an evening of conversation, featuring student presentations and a keynote address by Dr. Petrouchka Moise, digital curator and Assistant Professor at Grinnell College. The evening will conclude with Haitian food and music.
Dr. Petrouchka Moise is an artist-scholar specializing in Caribbean visual and material culture, curatorial studies, and digital humanities. Her work explores new ways of documenting and intepreting Haitian art beyond traditional archival frameworks. She is the Director of the Haitian Arts Digital Corssroads (HADC) project, where she developed the innovating methodology "going beyond provenance" to challenge gaps in art historical narratives and expand access to underrepresented cultural knowledge.
This event is free and open to all, with free parking available on site.
We hope to see you there!
