The School of Social Work Presents: Understanding Eating Disorders Through the Lens of Mental Illness
About this Event
Join us for an in-depth conversation featuring Yvonne Castañeda, a part-time faculty member in the Boston College School of Social Work & Director of Community Initiatives along with Kate Balch O'Neill ‘08 MCAS & BCAA Board Member. Yvonne and Kate will share their own experiences while discussing how eating disorders morph with mental illness and the prevalence of eating disorders in the BIPOC communities.
Don't forget to pick up a copy of Yvonne's new memoir, “Pork Belly Tacos with a Side of Anxiety,” released on Feb. 22, 2022. Castañeda recounts her prolonged struggle with depression, addiction, anxiety, and bulimia. She expertly weaves stories of her adolescence, growing up in Miami as the daughter of humble immigrants from Mexico and Cuba, with her mental struggle to find self-acceptance and how that led her to develop an unhealthy relationship with food.
*This discussion may be triggering for anyone who is struggling with mental illness and/or in recovery from an eating disorder.
