 n English at Columbia University. She is the Bernard Schoenberg Professor 
 of\nSocial Medicine\, Professor of Medicine\, and founding chair of the De
 partment of\nMedical Humanities and Ethics at Columbia University Vagelos 
 College of Physicians &\nSurgeons. Her research in narrative medicine has 
 been supported by the NIH\, the NEH\,\nand many private foundations. She a
 uthored\, co-authored\, or co-edited four books on\nnarrative medicine. Th
 e NEH\, the NIH\, the Association of American Medical Colleges\,\nand mult
 iple medical associations have honored her with awards and distinctions. S
 he\nlectures and teaches internationally and publishes extensively in lead
 ing medical and\nliterary journals\, including The New England Journal of 
 Medicine\, Lancet\, Journal of the\nAmerican Medical Association\, Academi
