The Schiller Institute presents the Health + Climate Speaker Series.

Vanni Bucci, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Physiological Systems at UMass Chan Medical School will present The Climate-Microbiome Initiative: Advancing science to fight climate-change effects on health via rational microbiome interventions.

Microbiomes drive the healthy functioning of environmental and human-associated ecosystems, playing a crucial role in maintaining their balance and resilience. However, extreme events resulting from climate change are predicted to strongly disrupt these microbiomes, with disastrous consequences for the health of these ecosystems. This talk will present a new climate-microbiome initiative aimed at dampening the effects of climate change on human health through rational microbiome manipulation. By leveraging an established multi-disciplinary team with expertise in infectious disease, bioengineering, computational modeling, and analytics, Professor Vanni Bucci demonstrates how microbiome intervention can be utilized to combat climate-change-exacerbated diseases including infections and undernutrition which disproportionately impact vulnerable populations such as expecting mothers and infants.

The lecture is 12-1 PM and will be followed immediately by a lunch reception.

The lecture will be held in the Schiller Institute Convening Space (Room 501, 245 Beacon St). Please register here.
