DESCRIPTION:Rita Duffy was born in Belfast and graduated with an honorary B
 A and MA in Fine Art from the University of Ulster in 1985. One of Ireland
 's groundbreaking visual artists\, she has produced acclaimed public art p
 rojects\, including her early project Thaw\, inspired by the Belfast ship 
 Titanic. This post-conflict project explored Belfast’s relationship with
  the iceberg and aimed to connect local experiences of colonialism and sec
 tarianism with a universal climate crisis. In 2011\, she was awarded a Lev
 erhulme Fellowship to work at the Transitional Justice Institute\, Univers
 ity of Ulster. She was recognised for her contribution to visual arts in I
 reland in 2018 and elected to Aosdana\, Ireland’s elected “people of t
 he arts.” She was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Archit
 ects and was an associate at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, where she
  looked at the role of art in post-conflict societies. In 2024\, she was a
 ppointed the Charlotte Maxeke-Mary Robinson Irish South Africa Research Ch
 air at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa.\n\nHer recent p
 rojects include The Shirt Factory Project\, The Souvenir Shop\, Soften the
  Border\, and The Raft. She has held residencies at the Long Room Hub at T
 rinity College in Dublin and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Duffy’s wor
 k is held in museum and private collections worldwide and her public art p
 rojects continue to grow in scale and ambition\, exploring issues of femal
 e identity\, history and politics\, and borders.\n\nCosponsored by Irish S
 tudies at Boston College and the Art\, Art History\, and Film Department.
