DESCRIPTION:How can the United States secure policy alignment from allies o
n issues contested by China? Professor Teraoka’s forthcoming book advances
our understanding of peacetime alliance cooperation by introducing a theory
of “procedural autonomy respect\,” which highlights how great powers’ trea
tment of allies’ decision-making processes shapes domestic political coalit
ions within allied states. Paradoxically\, when allies can credibly appear
independent of U.S. pressure\, they are often better positioned to sustain
strong alliance commitments. Drawing on original archival research and exte
nsive interviews\, the book analyzes U.S. alliance management in Asia from
the 1950s to the present and offers implications for alliance strategy amid
  intensifying U.S.–China rivalry.
