Racial Trauma, Healing, and Empowerment among Asian Americans — Dr. E.J.R David, Dr. Anne Saw and Dr. Usha Tummala-Narra
This presentation will focus racial trauma as experienced by Asian Americans. The three presenters will highlight various aspects of the Asian American Experience. Recent events have put a spotlight on anti-Asian racism, seemingly surprising many people and revealing how society has forgotten and invisibilized Asian Americans. Thus, this presentation will discuss the long history of anti-Asian racism, its nuances, and some ways we can facilitate healing in Asian American communities. Additionally the presentation will describe Asian Americans’ experiences with racism during the COVID-19 pandemic while examining the sociopolitical and historical contexts within which these experiences have emerged. The presenters will also discuss emerging community-centered work to promote healing from racism for Asian Americans. Finally, the presentation will include an exploration of the experience of race and racism among Indian Americans cross-generationally, from both empirical and clinical perspectives. Findings from qualitative studies conducted with first, 1.5, and second generation Indian Americans, focused on subtle and overt forms of racism and coping strategies will be reviewed and Clinical vignettes will be presented that highlight the importance of exploring the impact of racism within the context of psychotherapy.
