Professor Philip J. Ivanhoe, Ph.D is a world-renowned historian of Chinese thought and an expert in Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. He has recently served as Distinguished Chair Professor in the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy at Sungkyunkwan University, originally founded in Seoul in 1398.
This lecture examines the writings of two remarkable Korean women philosophers: Im Yunjidang 任允摯堂 (1721–1793) and Gang Jeongildang 姜靜一堂 (1772–1832) during the late Joseon dynasty (18th–19th centuries) in Korea. The presentation will highlight how the fact that they were women presented special challenges to the development of their philosophy, and explore how, on the one hand, they were able to overcome these challenges and, on the other, how it informed the content and style of their philosophy.
