DESCRIPTION:Born on the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota in 1896\,
Dakota Sioux artist Mary Sully was largely self-taught. Steeped in the vi
sual traditions of beadwork\, quilling\, and hide painting\, she also engag
ed with the experiments in time\, space\, symbolism\, and representation ch
aracteristic of early twentieth-century modernist art. She was fascinated b
y celebrity\, and over two decades she produced hundreds of colorful and dy
namic abstract triptychs\, a series of “personality prints” of American pub
lic figures like Amelia Earhart\, Babe Ruth\, and Gertrude Stein.\n\nPhilip
Deloria explores Sully's portfolio through the lenses of modernism\, indus
 trial design\, Dakota women’s aesthetics\, mental health\, ethnography and
anthropology\, primitivism\, and American Indian politics of the 1930s. He
recovers in Sully’s work a move toward an anti-colonial aesthetic that clai
med a critical role for Indigenous women in American Indian futures—within
and distinct from American modernity and modernism.\n\n \n\nPhilip J. Delor
ia is Professor of History at Harvard University and the author of Playing
Indian (1998) and Indians in Unexpected Places (2004)\, and co-author with
Alexander Olson of American Studies: A User’s Guide (2017). Deloria is a t
rustee of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Ind
ian\, where he chairs the Repatriation Committee. He is former president o
f the American Studies Association and an elected member of the American Ac
ademy of Arts and Sciences\, and he will serve as president of the Organiza
tion of American Historians in 2021.
