On Democratic Participation: A Celebration of Kay Schlozman
About this Event
View mapFifty years ago, Dr. Kay Schlozman launched her academic career at Boston College, where she was appointed Assistant Professor of Political Science in 1974. Over the ensuing decades, she established herself as one of the College’s most distinguished faculty members–and one of the leading scholars in her field. The author or co-author of no less than eight books, and more articles, essays, and book chapters than one can count, Prof. Schlozman has written seminal works on the role of gender in politics, civic voluntarism, civic culture, interest groups, and political participation. She has received fellowships and awards from many prestigious institutions, including the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Bellagio Center at the Rockefeller Foundation, among many others. And she has formed several generations of students, who have continued to build on her legacy.
To celebrate her many contributions to the study of democracy, and her retirement from Boston College, the Clough Center is delighted to co-sponsor “On Democratic Participation: A Celebration of Kay Schlozman.” This day-long conference, co-sponsored with the Political Department, will feature nine speakers from across the United States who have worked with Prof. Schlozman over her long and illustrious career. The conference’s three principal panels will respectively focus on interest groups, civic participation, and gender–all areas in which she has left a lasting mark upon her field. Please join us for this celebration of one of Boston College’s most prominent researchers, influential teachers, and dedicated citizens.
