The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is a nationally representative and longitudinal panel study of more than 20,000 people over the age of 50 that is fielded every two years. Administered by the University of Michigan, the HRS is funded by the National Institute on Aging and the Social Security Administration. Including data from 1992 onwards, this study covers issues related to health and health care utilization and costs, cognition, family structures, housing, income and wealth, employment, psycho-social topics, and more.

In this interactive dialogue, Drs. Latrica Best (sociology), Cal Halvorsen (social work), and Matthew Rutledge (economics) will present an overview of the HRS and its research possibilities. Within a multidisciplinary framework, they will share examples of how they have personally used HRS data to advance their research agendas and facilitate a discussion of how attendees might use the HRS themselves.
