MJE was founded in 2010 by mothers who had lost children to community violence. Our founders sought to share their voice and vision to the fight against violence. In 2013 we developed the ‘You Matter: Personal Leadership Training’, the core of MJE’s educational programming. In 2014, MJE began our Youth Peer Leadership program. In 2014, MJE designed and incorporated our Workforce Readiness Initiative. In 2015, MJE began offering a vision-driven Financial Literacy curriculum to inmates at the Suffolk County House of Corrections to expand our impact and address the needs of young adult inmates coming back into the community. Also in 2015 MJE began offering training to new Boston Police Cadets and Boston EMTs to prepare them when facing individuals dealing with trauma.

Recent accomplishments include:

  • One Million Hurting Souls to the Polls – MJE is conducting a voter engagement drive and to date over 600 individuals have registered to vote with our support. Phone bank activities will begin in mid-October and run through the November election.
  • MJE was recently selected to form a Parent/Police Partnership advisory group with the Boston Police Commissioner. The goal of this group is to improve community policing by addressing issues of families and engaging the police in community meetings.
  • MJE recently became a Department of Transitional Assistance work service site. As such we are supporting chronically unemployed mothers with workforce training.
  • MJE hosted A Conversation with Women of Color Leading Change in Boston in April 2016, with City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz, Rep. Gloria Fox, Monalisa Smith MJE CEO, Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and Mia Alvaro, MJE Board Chair. This event was profiled in the Dorchester Reporter: http://tinyurl.com/jqwdw63
  • MJE is an approved provider for the Boston Public Schools. This includes parent engagement training and offering our Youth Peer Leadership programs to students at various BPS sites.
