About this Event
Boston College, 300 Hammond Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467, USA
Join Erin Kate Scheopner (Senior Liaison at Boston College Libraries & Adjunct for History and Irish Studies at Boston College), as she talks about her book 'Miserable Conflict and Confusion': The Irish Question and the British National Press, 1916-1922. Miserable Conflict and Confusion investigates how the British national press covered Ireland and the 'Irish question' from the aftermath of the Easter Rising in 1916 to the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922. Using a case study of 11 newspapers, the book investigates daily press coverage from the formative 1916-22 period to offer broader contextualization and critical analysis of what the press, the reading public, and the government recognized to be happening in Ireland. Erin will offer an overview of this work, focusing on the development of coverage over time and highlighting favorite research findings. She will also share about the research process and consider the wider utility of using newspapers as a source.
All are welcome to attend and join the conversation!
