Speaker: Pradeep Choudhury, Research Fellow at the South Asia Institute (Harvard University) and Assistant Professor of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (India)

Among inequalities in different spheres of human society, inequalities in higher education in particular, are seen as too serious to ignore anymore. Existing evidence in economics and development studies shows that societies with better access to higher education prosper in all facets of development and well-being – social, economic, cultural, political and technological. In this talk, based on the most recent evidence, Dr. Choudhury will discuss three important inter-related dimensions of inequality in higher education, focusing on India: first, analysing the emerging trends and patterns of inequalities in access to higher education among different socioeconomic population groups; second, to examine the inequalities in family spending in higher education, and finally, to discuss the changing role of the state and market to (re)produce inequalities in higher education opportunities. The talk brings in several newer forms of inequalities in higher education that are critical to the global higher education policy debate.
