Legitimacy by Design: Governing in an Age of Distrust
About this Event
Boston College, Boston College Law School, 899 Centre Street, Newton, MA 02459, USA
On Tuesday, April 14, Rappaport Senior Fellow, Alex Peña, Executive Vice President for the Partnership for New York City will deliver his community address on "Legitimacy by Design: Governing in an age of Distrust." RSVP link: https://lnkd.in/eiudEand
Alex Peña will explore how trust in public institutions (and increasingly private institutions) is shaped not only by elections or formal law, but by the systems through which power is exercised in everyday life. Drawing on experience across government, campaigns, and public-policy leadership, he explores what democratic legitimacy requires at a moment when so many people feel disconnected from the institutions and systems making decisions that affect them. The talk considers not only the legal and political consequences of that distance, but its cultural costs as well: what happens to public confidence, civic belonging, and our shared sense of democratic life when authority often feels too remote, too artificial, or too difficult to challenge.
