Bernabeu will relate the long journey to bring Colonel Inocente Orlando Montano to trial in Spain, where he was recently sentenced to 133 years in prison for the massacre of Ignacio Martín-Baró and the other Jesuits and two women in 1989. This trial and conviction mark only the second time in which a case brought before Spanish courts goes forward on the basis of a universal duty to provide national access to courts for human rights abuse victims. In addition to the celebration of this small step forward against impunity, the Jesuits’ case has the potential of recovering an important practice to provide justice and to prevent further abuses.
MBI grantees will discuss their work, which has been supported by grants from the MBI.
