James by Percival Everett

James, by Percival Everett, is a 2024 novel retelling Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of the enslaved man, Jim, focusing on his intelligence, deep desire for family freedom, and complex inner life as he escapes down the Mississippi River with Huck, revealing the brutality of slavery with more depth and agency for Jim than the original story allowed, becoming a major literary work in its own right.
