In the Institute for Scientific Research Colloquium Series, Professor Ashanthi Maxworth, University of Southern Maine, presents a talk on characterizing a difficult altitude region of the ionosphere to assess. The altitude is too high for balloon studies and too low for satellite measurements. The talk concerns observations of the phenomenon of lightning-generated "tweek atmospherics", tweeks for short, that propagate within the earth-ionosphere waveguide. These tweeks can be detected in the ELF (300Hz – 3kHz) and VLF (3kHz – 30kHz) radio frequency bands. Come hear about this exciting new research.

Light refreshments start 10:15am. Directions in website link. (Do not go to BC Law Library, but the old Kenny Cottle Library building past Stuart House across the quad.)
