ETD Reading Group: What is education for?
Wednesday, April 23, 2025 3pm to 4pm
About this Event
In anticipation of our Excellence in Teaching Day keynote by Danielle Allen, we’ll be holding discussions of her work on Wednesday, April 23rd from 3:00 - 4:00 pm (on Zoom) and Thursday, April 24th from 12:00 - 1:00 pm (in-person). Lunch will be provided for those attending the in-person session and all instructors are welcome to join.
We’ll focus our conversation primarily on “What is education for?” from Boston Review (2016), where Allen argues that education’s goal should be developing students’ “participatory readiness” for civic agency.
Those who want to do a deeper dive into Allen’s work can explore the following additional readings:
- “Cultivating Participatory Readiness” (pp. 43 - 50) excerpt from Education and Equality (2016)
- Can Higher Education Help Renew Democracy? from Change (March/April 2024)
The first ten people to register for either reading group session will receive a copy of Allen’s 2022 book, Democracy in the Time of Coronavirus.
The Center for Teaching Excellence is committed to providing equal access to its events and programs.
