DESCRIPTION:Dmytro Vovk\nBenjamin N. Cardozo School of Law\n\nThe relations
between the Ukrainian state and religion have always been heavily persona
lized. Since independence\, they have been determined not so much by const
itutional protections or legal regulations and procedures but more by reli
gions’ political connections and their ability to transform these connec
tions into benefits and advantages on Ukraine’s highly competitive relig
ious market. This has made personal religious attitudes and preferences po
ssessed by key political actors\, and\, first of all\, by the Ukrainian Pr
esident\, extremely important for the model of the country’s religion-st
ate relations.\n\nVolodymyr Zelensky’s presidency is not an exception fr
om this personalized pattern and\, at the same time\, is unique in terms o
f the core ideas behind his approach to religion. Since his election in 20
19\, Zelensky seems to have made an impressive religio-political journey f
rom no religious agenda to the heavy involvement in inter-Orthodox relatio
ns since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.\n\nIn his lectur
e\, Dmytro Vovk will explain why and to what extent Zelensky's personal an
d political approach to religion and religions has changed and what it mea
ns for the Ukrainian model of religion-state relations.
