Delvyn Case's "The Binding of Isaac According to the Elohist": A Live Musical Performance and Panel Discussion
Award-winning American composer Delvyn Case conducts the Deus Ex Musica Ensemble in a live performance of his dramatic new solo cantata based on Genesis 22. Daring to imagine alternative ending to this infamous story, this 25-minute piece explores the complex theological, narrative, and interpretive challenges of this infamous passage by highlighting how the thread of sacrificial violence tragically binds together Elohim, Abraham, and Isaac–and, through its historical legacy–all of us as well. The performance will be followed by an interfaith panel of scholars and clergy: Charisse Barron (Harvard University), Delvyn Case (Wheaton College, Massachusetts), Ruth Langer (Boston College), and Tzemah Yoreh (City Congregation in New York City). Presented as part of the national conference of the American Academy of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature. Sponsored by the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning at Boston College and co-produced by Deus Ex Musica. Free and open to all.
