Inspired by Evelyn Underhill’s vision of the spiritual life, “Consecrated Ruptures: Finding the Mystical in Ordinary Life” engages the work of Irish thinker William Desmond to imagine how we might encounter the sacred within a secular world. Drawing on Desmond’s philosophy and poetry, together with scriptural and personal narratives, Father Ryan G. Duns, S.J., associate professor of theology, Marquette University, explores how sudden and disruptive “breakdowns” can become moments of gracious “breakthrough” that attune us to the mystical dimension of everyday life.
