Máire Bhuí Ní Laoire's epic song Cath Chéim an Fhia (The Battle of the Deer Pass) commemorates the struggle between a secret peasant society and a local militia in 1822.

Like most Irish Catholic peasants 200 years ago, Ní Laoire was illiterate, yet she composed powerful songs of resistance in Irish that are still sung in the Gaeltacht regions of Munster Province to this day. One of the most famous, Cath Chéim an Fhia, describes a deadly battle between a secret society, led by a leader known as Captain Rock, and the local militia.

In this talk master's student Rowan Bianchi will provide context for the song using their research into Captain Rock and the Rockites. Assistant Professor Seán Cahill will then present on the song, the social and political context  in which it emerged, as well as its meaning to the local people of the Muscraí region of west Cork.
