In her new book, British-Irish Relations in the Twenty-First Century (Oxford University Press 2024), Professor Etain Tannam (Trinity College Dublin) examines the impact of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and Brexit on Northern Ireland, and on British-Irish relations, from 1998 to 2023. Tannam highlights the Agreement's successes, but also its failures, and argues that the governments' weak guardianship of the Agreement contributed to its limitations. She concludes that a joint intergovernmental strategy will be needed to manage identity politics, especially given the possibility of a future referendum on a United Ireland.

To mark the publication of this important study, Professor Etain Tannam will engage in conversation with the Vice Consul General at the Irish Consulate General of Ireland in Boston Paul Rooney and His Majesty’s Consul General to New England David Clay MBE. The moderated panel discussion will consider and analyze the totality of relationships between Britain and Ireland in the 21st century against the backdrop of Brexit and domestic and international instability.
