Fostering Spaces to “Do” Bilingualism: Collaborative Bilingual Identity Texts
Presenter: Dr. Laura Hamman-Ortiz, University of Colorado-Boulder
Description: Two-way immersion (TWI) programs are typically structured in ways that separate the two languages of instruction. While this practice can be useful for promoting focused language practice, it also perpetuates the false understanding of bilingualism as “double monolingualism” and can prevent students from leveraging all that they know across their entire linguistic repertoire for making meaning. In this webinar, we consider what it means to intentionally create spaces for students in TWI classrooms to “do” bilingualism through the example of student-generated collaborative bilingual identity texts.
