1984: Stop Making Sense
An exhibition by the Art Department's Professor Hartmut Austen, with contributions by Sara Chung '20 and Lucas Mockler '18.
Jonathan Demme's 1984 film "Stop Making Sense," a concert film of a live performance by the Talking Heads, had a profound effect on the young Hartmut Austen, who was just finishing Middle School in Germany and becoming interested in the visual arts. For this show, he re-visits some of his drawings from that seminal year, as well as images from Demme's film. Within a frenzied timeframe inspired by the energy and structure of that film, Professor Austen with the help of two Studio Art majors draws on these earlier works to interrogate prints left behind by the previous tenant of Professor Austen's current studio. The new pieces, many with motifs related to the New England area, reflect Professor Austen's recent move to Boston.
