"Higgs hunting on a budget"
The recent discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN was a great victory for the Standard Model of particle physics. In my talk, I will discuss how excitations that are analogous to the Higgs boson exist in condensed matter and cold atomic systems. I will review the existing evidence for such Higgs-like excitations in systems including superfluids, superconductors, antiferromagnets, and solids. I will also present a proposal by which a coherently driven Higgs mode can be used to amplify light.
