Earthworks: DIY Workshop
Sure, we like to sit back and look at fancy art, but we also enjoy making our own art too. As part of its continuing DIY series, the Museum invites students to make their own works of art in and around the Museum. Inspired by Nature’s Mirror: Reality and Symbol in Belgian Landscape, this time we’re heading outdoors into the autumn leaves and crisp air to create our very own earthworks.
Earthworks, also referred to as land art or earth art, was a predominantly American movement inspired by minimalism, conceptual art, and the growing environmental movement in the 1960s and 70s. Hoping to get away from the capitalist enterprises of the art gallery, museum, and art market, artists used elements from the natural landscape to create site-specific art forms made of simple materials that couldn’t be bought and sold or displayed in a gallery.
The Earthworks Workshop, guided by arts professor Ariel Freiberg, will feature the opportunity to transform the environment around you using natural, found materials and a variety of art supplies. If the weather is bad, we’ll transform the Museum.
No prior artistic experience required. We’ll provide the materials, you provide the creativity.
